Thinking about buying or selling a used car in Hungary? You may have heard that it can now be done from your phone, through the DÁP app (Digital Citizenship App — Digitális Állampolgár). The short answer is yes — but only if your situation fits.

A used car sale via the DÁP app (Hungarian: használt autó adásvétel DÁP) has pitfalls the system won’t warn you about. In this guide, we show you when the digital route works — and when you’re better off consulting a lawyer.

What Can the DÁP App Actually Do for a Used Car Sale?

From digital contract to ownership transfer — the full process in brief

Since March 2026, the app allows used car sales between private individuals to be handled entirely without paper. The seller initiates the process, and the buyer joins via QR code or a shared link. The system automatically verifies both parties’ data and the vehicle’s details, then generates a draft contract that both sides sign digitally.

After signing, the purchase price is paid and the car is handed over outside the application. The seller then reports the change of ownership, while the buyer arranges insurance, completes the mandatory vehicle origin check (eredetiségvizsgálat), and handles the registration transfer and duty payment — all from within the app.

DÁP app car sale requirements step by step: who can use it?

Both parties must have the app installed, an active digital citizenship status, an eSignature certificate, and the associated password. The seller must be a private individual who is the sole owner and registered operator of the vehicle. The car must have a valid Hungarian licence plate and be listed as eligible for electronic sale in the national vehicle registry.

When Does a DÁP Car Sale Make Sense?

The ideal scenario: a simple transaction between strangers

The app truly shines when two unrelated private individuals are buying and selling a mid-range vehicle, no special contractual clauses are needed, and both parties are “DÁP-ready.” In these cases, the system delivers exactly what it was designed for: fast, simple and convenient administration.

Time savings and going paperless — the real advantages

The built-in process can cut the administrative work down to 10–20 minutes. No need to print four copies, no need to find witnesses, and no queuing at the government office (kormányablak). In our firm’s experience, for straightforward transactions this solution is genuinely efficient and reliable.

Selling to a Relative via DÁP — The Most Expensive Mistake You Can Make

What benefits do you lose by selling your car to a family member digitally?

If you sell your car to a parent, child, sibling or spouse through the app, you automatically forfeit the duty exemption and the waiver of the mandatory origin check for close relatives. In practice, this means unnecessary extra costs of HUF 50,000–80,000 (approximately EUR 125–200) — simply because you chose the wrong contracting method.

Why is a paper-based contract the better choice in these cases?

The system currently cannot recognise family relationships, so the benefits for close relatives can only be claimed with a paper contract and in-person processing at a government office. This is one of the most common and costliest risks of digital car sale in Hungary (Hungarian: digitális adásvétel kockázatai).

The DÁP Template Contract Won’t Protect You from Everything

Warranty, hidden defects — what the digital contract leaves out

The contract generated in the app includes the legally required elements, but does not cover warranty terms, a detailed condition description, or a record of known defects. Under the Hungarian Civil Code (Ptk.), private sellers may fully exclude their warranty liability — which can work against the buyer if the contract lacks protective provisions.

Deposit, instalment payments, retention of title: what doesn’t fit the template

If the parties agree on a deposit (foglaló), instalment payments, or the seller wishes to retain ownership until the full price is paid, the DÁP template simply cannot accommodate these terms. Such arrangements require individually tailored legal drafting — without it, neither party can effectively enforce their claims in a dispute.

When Do You Need a Lawyer for a DÁP Car Sale?

5 typical situations where the DÁP app is not enough

In our legal practice, we regularly encounter cases where the template contract falls short. This includes vehicles worth over HUF 1–2 million, transactions involving a deposit or instalment payments, cars with multiple owners, disputes over the vehicle’s condition, or situations where one party is a company or a foreign national.

What does a lawyer-drafted contract add?

A contract prepared by a lawyer can document known defects, define the exact scope of warranty obligations, and set out the legal consequences of a deposit. It can also specify the conditions for ownership transfer and include the right of withdrawal.

A lawyer’s countersignature also replaces the need for two witnesses. So when do you need a lawyer for a DÁP car sale (Hungarian: DÁP mikor kell ügyvéd)? Whenever the stakes justify the security.

Digital Convenience and Legal Safety Are Not Mutually Exclusive

The DÁP app is a great tool — but it doesn’t replace legal expertise

Buying or selling a used car via the DÁP app is a genuine step forward in Hungarian digital public administration. It’s simple, fast and convenient — but you need to know its limits. If you’re unsure whether your situation is right for a DÁP car sale, or if the vehicle has significant value, it’s worth seeking professional advice before you sign.
